13 Lucky Garage Punk Pounders Straight Outta The Midwest!

Ten-High-Party-Store

In a Friday 10 a couple week's ago, I wrote:

10 Don't Lay It On Me - Paybacks: Do I get the Paybacks every week? That's alright by me. Great band, great rock and roll voice on Wendy Case, as I have written so many times already. Before the Paybacks, she was in a band called Ten High that released one record called Party Store. There's a song on it that Case co-wrote with Kim Fowley ("Sins of the Family"), which reminds me that when I saw the Paybacks live at a festival on Randall's Island a couple years ago, Fowley introduced them. I just got Party Store used off Amazon for $2.56. Can't wait to hear it; when it gets here, I'll let you know how it is. By the way, it's phenomenal that the Paybacks show up on these Friday 10s with such regularity. I have only six of their songs on the iPod. Out of 5,554 songs, that's 1%.

I have the Ten High disk on right now. Good stuff. The songs are more up-tempo and a little less heavy than her Paybacks material. "Your Body and Not Yer Soul" and the song Kim Fowley co-wrote with Case are good, as is the cover of the Seeds' "Satisfy You." (Sky Saxon and Jan Savage could write some songs, couldn't they?!) Bobby Balderrama of ? and the Mysterians plays a guitar solo on the opening track, "Get On." That's a big-time guest player, but no surprise considering how cool all the Question Markers have been, and how strongly they support their Detroit scene.

I am sure a bunch of these will make their way onto my iPod tonight. It cost me less than three bucks. If you've got that much to spare, I'd recommend you get a used copy for your own self on the Amazon.

It was really a thrill for me last week to find a comment on The Sticking Point by the great Tom Troccoli (Vida, Nig-Heist, October Faction, Tom Troccoli's Dog). He's not just a self-Googler (which is how, I'm guessing, he found his way to TSP), but he hosts his own website which has great info, pictures, and everything you need to know about the bands I listed above as well as a link to downloads, a D Boon Tribute page, and loads of anecdotes about the SST family of bands.

Thanks, Tom.
